Who is the Rock?

Who is the Rock?

Last time, we saw that Peter recognized that Jesus is indeed the Christ, the Son of the living God, and what that meant to Peter, from Matthew 16:16.

Now let us look at Jesus' response: Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. (Matthew 16:17-18)

It is often taught that Jesus renamed Simon, Peter, meaning "rock", and that on Peter the church would be built. But the church is not built upon any man but the Man. Jesus was calling Simon "rock"as a permanent reminder of what he (Peter) had just recognized. Jesus did not say "I am building my church on you." The Rock upon which Jesus would build His church was this idea; that those who would be the church would be those who recognized that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Simon was called the rock, but Jesus is the Rock. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 3:3-4)

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." (Matt. 7:24-25)

Amen.

How will you answer when He asks you "Who do you say I am?"

"The branch of the vine does not worry, and toil, and rush here to seek for sunshine, and there to find rain. No; it rests in union and communion with the vine; and at the right time, and in the right way, is the right fruit found on it. Let us so abide in the Lord Jesus." Hudson Taylor
